For a long time District Five was the place to be if you wanted to work with animals, and remnants of this industry still remain, from scattered ranches to exotic pet breeding. However, the time has changed, and oil rigs and refineries are the far more common sights nowadays. Sadly, the region is becoming far more polluted than in previous years; the sun is now as black as the night sky and the acidic rain has eaten away at everything that was once beautiful. Unfortauntely, most of the people here have little money and are drowning in financial problems.

Personality
Due to his father's beatings, Shane has a bit of trust issues. But despite that, he is extremely tough and can be a jackass. Shane is very sarcastic and he won't hesitate to say what he really thinks about you. During his school years, Shane was known as the 'heart-breaker', for dating girls and dumping them by the next week. The only person he doesn't act like a total jerk to is his best friend, Alice.

History
Shane was born toward the outer rim of District five, to a finicky mother and a very indifferent father. His father obsessed over moving up in society, something that wasn’t an ostensible talent of his. But everything seemed to go by perfectly well; they had enough money to get by, and Shane had no trouble in school. But six weeks after Shane's 11th birthday, his mother did the unthinkable.. she killed herself.

Not only was Shane crushed, but his father went mad and began spending every last bit of their money, drinking the nights away. It was then, that his father decided to make Shane's life a living hell. The only other person who knew that Shane suffered through the pain his father inflicted upon him was Alice, his best friend. Shane contemplated running away several times, but then again, where would he run away to?

As Shane grew older and was eventually old enough to work at the Oil Refinery in District Five, he maintained a small job repairing and dealing with malfunctions in the plant. It was an easy job where he sometimes got to just sit around, and it was far better than being confined in a small space and drilling for endless hours.

The day of the reaping for the 71st Annual Hunger Games, Shane volunteered. He was 15 years old. He surprised everyone with his impressive dexterity, unbelievable bravery and skill with many weapons. Nobody really expected him to win.. but he did.
